From the later 16th century onward, music from the English Masque was all the rage in both England and on the Continent. English masquing books contain many references to ensembles of lutes taking part in masque performances. Settings of music from English masques were published in numerous Continental sources, such as the Thysius Lute Book and William Brade’s collection of 5-part consort settings (1617), which included arrangements of much of this repertoire. This delightful music is at the center of Airy Entertainments, the title of the next recording project of the Venere Lute Quartet. "The Duets of Enriquez Valderabbano"

With a special discussion of the
Chambure Vihuela by
luthier Daniel Larson

Sunday July 17 - Tuesday July 19, 2011
Gijón, Spain.

Duo Chambure presents a performance of vihuela duets by Enriquez Valderrabano at the International Lute Society meeting taking place in Gijón Spain. Valderrabano's Silva de Sirenas (“Sylvan wood of Sirens”) was composed as the fourth of seven books for vihuela and published in 1547 in Valladolid.  Valderrabano’s book was highly esteemed in its day, and he appears to have been a musician to the Conde de Miranda, the dedicatee of his book.  Valderrabano has the distinction as being the only vihuelista to have written for 2 vihuelas.  These duets comprise the entire Libro 4 of Silva de Sirenas, and contain astonishingly beautiful works for vihuelas in unison, a minor 3rd, a 4th, and a 5th apart.
